It's fermenting! The fermentation didn't start very well and I had to use yeast (Hefe) and sugar (3 Kilos per Hectolitre!) to help the process. This addition is normal and called chaptalisation . All the pieces of grapes are pushed on the top of the bucket due to the fermentation. Below, the juice is fermenting and bubbling. A little.

The 2008 harvest of the Domaine Château Petite-Maison is done! The vine produced more grapes but the fruits didn't get rippened. Not enough sun... We could have wait... Anyway, it's done! This year, I was better prepared. I took also the time to select the fruits and to remove the green or rotten grapes and the insects as well. We had to buy at the last moment a third bucket for the extra grapes. The fermentation will be done in the laundry room which is warm thanks to the boiler and should start tomorrow...

Color my blog

Little change on the blog. The black background has disappeared and the text is more colorful. Finally the blog looks like the little house. White with a few color touches...

Drup drup

This week, as you certainly realized, the weather became suddenly cold and the temperature went down to 15°C in the house. I switched the warming system on. Since it worked for the first time since the old and the 2 new radiators have been (re-)installed, I had to check if there was no leek as the system was filling in with water. Drip drop! I discovered a small leek at the bottom of the expansion tank (Expansionsgefäss) in the attic. The day after, there was another leek, even bigger and more serious. The expansion tank is completly rusty and rotten inside... Now, we are waiting for the plumber who will ask CHF 100 per hour. These two leeks will cost us one week of holidays full-board for two persons on the Maldives... Well, not the end of the world... I don't like the combination of sunscreen cream and sand anyway...

The good news of the week is the return of the sun! This is exactly what needed the grapes to produce enough sugar... By the way, after the flop of the rosé, this year, I'm going to produce red wine!

Soon the harvest 2008... The summer was at the same time quite sunny and rainy and it seems it was good for the vine. I feel we will get more grapes this year. On the other side, I'm not sure about the quality of the grapes. During the last two weeks, it rained a lot and the fruits don't ripen (reifen). One or two sunny weeks would be appreciated. Last year, we harvested (too late) the 26th and this year I think we will have to wait until the end of the month...

The little house in the tropical grove

Some days ago, we went twice at the waste reception center and brought about ten buckets full of rubbles and stones. Now, we still have to get rid of the four old tires we found in the garden and again some buckets of stones...

I liked my little mess but the boss asked me to clean everything up, then...

... Alors, j'ai rangé. Bon, c'est peut-être mieux...
... Then, I cleaned everything up. Maybe, it's better now...

Anyway, I like the order in my drawer!

Today, I made a hole in the garden.

I put some fertilizer in (my new tattoo, not bad, isn't it?).

And I planted a banana tree. If everything goes well and if the global warming goes on, we should have fruits in three years...

One

Un an déjà!
Soyons optimistes!
Already one year! One year that we got the keys and we started the renovation. One year ago, I was quite confident but above all, without any experience. I thought that we could renovate in three months. That it would be tough but doable. That we could move in December in and celebrate Christmas in our home sweet home...
I invite you to take a look to all the posts (just the pictures!) which have been published for one year, since the first of September 2007 (scroll down, down!) so you are able to see the changes when you will come to our warming house party. In a little while! Let's be optimistic!

The dark side

A few of you are surprised when we say that we still have a lot to do in the house. "What?! Com'on! Finish your joints in the kitchen, vacuum-clean and here you go! Done!". Well, not exactly. This is not so simple. I have to confess that I've abused of your confidence. This blog is just dissimulation and propaganda! I've showed you the nicest side of the house without showing you what happens behind the scenes. The dark side of the house. The dust, the mess and the darkness...

The entrance. To do: clean the tiles and replace some of them.

La porte d'entrée. Finir de décaper, poncer puis peindre.
The entrance door. To do: sandpaper and paint.

The guest toilets. To do: the floor, paint the white walls and repair the baseboards.

The stairway. To do: paint the rest (yes, it was not done!).

Mon bureau.
My study. Perfect! I keep it like this!

La chambre à coucher. Réparer mon armoire pour y ranger mon linge.
The bedroom. To do: repair the wardrobe and tidy my clothing up.

La chambre d'ami. Mmh... Installer un hamac par dessus?
The guestroom. Mmh... Hang a hammock above the mess?

Le grenier. Rien n'a changé depuis début août. Feignasse, va!
The attic. Nothing changed since the beginning of August. You lazy bone!

The basement. My favorite room. Too bad there is no flies anymore...

L'électricité. Commencée en novembre, jamais finie.
The electricity. Started in November, never finished.

The garden. Looks a little like Chernobyl, the city. The grass grows up and the tomatoes die!

Some of you are wondering what's happening in the house... Frankly, not much. Since beginning of July, things did not really move forward. And since we are back from our vacation, we did not spend too much time in the renovation. Ginette is too busy with her 190 students and unfortunately, I forgot the main thing on the Island of Ré: my motivation. Anyway, here is what happened since the last post, almost three weeks ago...

One tile in the middle of the kitchen has been replaced.

Five other unstick or broken tiles have been replaced.

The joints soiled by 80 years of culinary activities have been renewed. Actually, just a part. I still have 1/3 to do in the kitchen. Then, I will have to do the entrance and the toilets...

That's all! Not much, but it took a lot of time... Moreover, the old tiles that we have decided to keep are more damaged than we thought and we will have to replace more than planned...

29 AUGUST 2008

Allez hop! Cinq tomettes de plus remplacées.
Here we go! Five more tiles replaced.

There is no surprise: the 2007 vintage is not what I expected at the beginning. Normal, I didn't have always the time to take care of it, we had some very cold days when the fermentation requested warmer temperatures, I had to interrupt the fermentation process, then it was too humid in the basement and I should have filtered the wine 6 months earlier. Let alone some other mistakes I made... In short, the 2007 vintage of the Domaine Fronggini wine is not even good enough to dress a simple salad (little remind of the fabrication here, there et also there). I look forward to the 08 harvest...

The color is nice though! The wine in the bottle on the left comes from a "tank" where I added some sugar (an old Spanish recipe... or Italian, I don't know anymore!). It seems that the wine, for some reasons, didn't ferment and went moldy!

Rack'n'holes

We are back in the renovation and we hope to finish soon. Well, it will be tough because I will be again alone to work. Tomorrow is the start of the school and Ginette, with her own lessons and the lessons of the other teacher she replaces until october, will be very very busy...

First thing done when we came back: fill in the hole that the flies liked so much in the basement.

Building et filling in of the shelves of the favorite French teacher.

Dismantling, cleaning and reassembling of our vacuum cleaner. Unfortunately, it was not enough and I'm afraid it will die soon. One more which didn't bear the renovation...

Filling in of the hole in the ceiling of the attic.

Taking off of the wallpaper in the attic which will be our dressing. Boring and slow!

Holiday (2)

We are back! After basking in the sun on the Ile de Ré (here!) (here in French but more pictures!) and after discovering Estaires, the homeland of my ancestors (there! sorry, only in French!), we came back home where a pleasant odor of fresh paint welcomed us (it smelled like a new house!)... and unfortunately a swarm of little flies in the basement as well (result of our last waste water seepage)...
When I see what we still have to do here, I'm wondering if I should come back...

Deux semaines sans voiture.
Two weeks without car.

Some meat to grill, some fresh beers and some chips. A perfect world!

Served with a white wine produced on the island...

This evening, we felt like in Britany. We had crepes and cider.

Les marais salants.
Salterns.

Preparation for the coming start of school before going to the beach.

Alerte à Malibu-en-Ré (ben oui, j'me suis retouché les poignées d'amour!).
Baywatch on the Gros Jonc beach (well, yes. I retouched my spare tire. Just a little).

Ginette à l'eau.
The little mermaid.

Game: Ginette has lost her husband in the waves. Help her to get him back! Little clue: the buoy is not a buoy.
